exCover privacy policy
Last updated: 24 October 2026
exCover is made by Rana ("I", "me"). This policy explains what exCover does with your data. The short version: exCover has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and I never receive any of your data. One optional feature, the clock behind the subject, uses a Google Play services component that reports usage diagnostics to Google; it's described below.
What stays on your phone
- GIFs and videos you import. GIFs you pick from your gallery, download from GIPHY or import from a link are copied into exCover's private storage on your phone so they can play on your screens. A video you pick is read on your phone, and the part you choose is turned into a clip there; the video itself is never copied or sent anywhere. None of this leaves your phone, unless you choose to save one back to your gallery.
- Your settings. Which GIF goes on which screen, your framing, favourites and shuffling, clock face and its place and size, and always-on display look are stored on your phone only.
- Your lock GIF's subject. With Clock behind the subject on, exCover works out where the person, pet or object is in each frame of your lock GIF, on your phone, and keeps that outline in its private storage so the clock can sit behind it. The GIF and the outlines never leave your phone.
Uninstalling exCover deletes all of this.
What goes over the internet
exCover connects to the internet only when you ask it to:
- GIPHY search. When you search GIPHY inside exCover, your search words are sent to GIPHY's servers to get results, and the GIFs you open are downloaded from GIPHY. When GIPHY's search is busy, exCover opens GIPHY's own website inside the app instead; that website works as it does in a browser, cookies included. GIPHY handles all of this under its own privacy policy: https://support.giphy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032872931
- GIF links. When you paste a link and import it, exCover downloads the GIF from that address. The website you link to sees an ordinary download request from your phone.
- The unlock. exCover's one-time unlock is sold through Google Play, which handles the payment under its own terms and privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy). exCover never sees your card, UPI or account details. It asks Google Play whether the unlock is yours and keeps the answer on your phone.
- Clock behind the subject (optional, off unless you turn it on). Finding the subject uses Google's ML Kit subject segmentation, part of Google Play services on your phone. Turning the feature on downloads its model (about 19 MB) once from Google. The analysis happens on your phone and your GIFs are never sent anywhere, but ML Kit sends Google diagnostics about how the feature runs: device details (model, Android version, available accelerators), exCover's name and version, a per-installation identifier, and performance and error information. Google uses this for diagnostics and usage analytics, encrypts it in transit and doesn't pass it to third parties. See Google's ML Kit data disclosure (https://developers.google.com/ml-kit/android-data-disclosure) and privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy). Turn the feature off and none of this happens.
exCover sends nothing else, and nothing at all to me.
Children
exCover isn't directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
